Impetus Human Rights Awards Scheme
The Impetus Human Rights Award Scheme is a UK-wide initiative celebrating good practice in human rights education for citizenship within schools and youth organisations. The Scheme is administered within the UK by the Institute for Global Ethics and the Citizenship Foundation. The Scheme is sponsored by the Lord Chancellor’s Department, and funded by the Gordon Cook Foundation.

St. Columb's Park House has had responsibility for coordinating the Scheme in Northern Ireland since January 2002. As part of our role, we facilitate a NI Awards Panel, which includes educationalists, and youth and community workers, many of whom are engaged in human rights/citizenship education.
The Panel meets each year to assess submissions from schools & youth groups, which, to date, have included a wide range of issues including: school-based peer mediation, homelessness, policing, paramilitarism, child soldiers, racism, discrimination against young people with learning difficulties, bullying, and the rights of the elderly.
Submissions considered to meet the Scheme's criteria are invited to a Northern Ireland showcase event, and awarded a certificate. Three or four projects, that exemplify particularly good practice, are selected to represent Northern Ireland at a UK showcase later in the year.
